Not a Chance its by Chance

Experiencing the Providence of God: His Hand in Everyday Life

Just this week, my son experienced the providence of God firsthand through a series of car mishaps and fender benders. At first, it seemed like a string of bad luck—one incident after another. But as the situation unfolded, it became clear that God was at work in ways we couldn’t see at the moment. Each delay, each inconvenience, even each moment of frustration led to something unexpected—protection, provision, and a reminder that nothing in our lives happens by accident.

Life is full of these moments—sometimes we recognize them immediately, and other times we only see God’s hand when we look back. The Bible teaches that God is always in control, guiding, sustaining, and providing for His people. This is the providence of God—His divine care over all things, even when life feels chaotic.

What Does the Bible Say About God’s Providence?

Though the word “providence” isn’t explicitly used in Scripture, the truth of it is woven throughout the Bible. God doesn’t just create and then step back—He is actively involved in our daily lives.

1. God Sustains All Things

God is not distant; He upholds the universe and everything in it.

  • Colossians 1:17 – “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
  • Hebrews 1:3 – “He upholds the universe by the word of His power.”

Even the smallest details—like the air we breathe and the beating of our hearts—are sustained by Him.

2. God Directs Our Steps

No moment in life is random. Even when we make plans, God is the One who establishes our path.

  • Proverbs 16:9 – “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
  • Romans 8:28 – “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”

Even setbacks and struggles are being woven into a greater purpose we can’t always see.

3. God Works Through Both Good and Bad Circumstances

Sometimes, what looks like a problem is actually God’s protection. He can use even hardships for His glory.

  • Genesis 50:20 – “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.”
  • Acts 2:23-24 – Jesus’ crucifixion was part of God’s plan to bring salvation, even though it seemed like tragedy.

No situation is outside of God’s power to redeem.

How Can We See God’s Providence in Our Everyday Lives?

1. Through Unexpected Protection

Like my son’s experience this week, what seems like a problem can actually be God’s way of keeping us from something worse. Delays, disruptions, and even disappointments might be His way of steering us in the right direction.

2. In Divine Appointments

Ever met the right person at just the right time? Or had a conversation that changed your perspective? These moments are not coincidences; they are God’s providence.

3. In Life’s Detours and Delays

When things don’t go according to plan, it’s easy to feel frustrated. But looking back, we often realize that God was redirecting us for a reason—whether it was for our safety, our growth, or to bring us to a better opportunity.

4. In His Daily Provisions

From the food on our table to the strength to get through tough days, God provides what we need, even when we take it for granted. Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11), reminding us that every provision comes from Him.

Trusting in God’s Providence

Believing in God’s providence doesn’t mean life will always be easy. But it does mean we can trust that nothing is random or meaningless in God’s hands.

  • When life feels uncertain, we can rest in His sovereignty.
  • When struggles come, we can trust His purpose.
  • When we don’t see the way forward, we can rely on His guidance.

God’s providence is not just an idea—it is a reality we experience every day if we open our eyes to see His hand at work.
